Leadership at Kyabram P-12 College

Kyabram P-12 College values the voice of our students in the decision making of our college, and we encourage our students to become leaders through a number of opportunities. Our Student Leaders have the opportunity to participate in a Leadership Training day, and to lead others by running lunchtime activities for their peers. They also have the opportunity to assist in the running of a number of school activities.

Debating

Debating is a team-based academic activity that
extends students who excel in areas of English. Teams of three students develop and discuss arguments on a given topic.

What competitions can I enter?

We compete in a number of competitions throughout the year available to students at every year level. This includes:

  • Debaters Association of Victoria Schools
    Competition (Years 9-12)
  • Echuca-Moama Apex Debating Competition
    (Years 7-12)
  • Rotary Debating Competition (Years 7-12)
  • Northern Rivers Debating Competition
    (Years 7-12)
Youth Parliament

YMCA Youth Parliament is a program designed to give young people a chance to be heard at the highest levels of State Government, on a wide range of issues relevant to young people’s lives.

During the program, one team of six students receives training in public speaking and leadership at residential camps, as they research issues they are passionate about. From this research they develop a Bill, which they debate in Victorian Parliament over three days each July.

This opportunity is available to students in Years 10-12.

Public Speaking
Public Speaking is an extra-curricular activity that helps to build student confidence and skills in research, writing, and speaking. It is an opportunity for students to extend themselves through the art of oration and learn to speak with confidence in front of a group.

  • Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition (Years 7-12)
  • Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition (Years 7-9)
  • Rotary Tom Tehan Public Speaking Competition
United Nations Youth Evatt
UN Youth Evatt is a negotiation and diplomacy competition where students are given the opportunity to take part in the process of the United Nations Security Council. Students debate on issues of international security, human right and current affairs as UN Security Council representatives from various countries. This competition is open to teams of two students from Years 9-12.
Tournament Of Minds
Tournament of Minds is a teambased competition that relies on teamwork, creativity and theatre. A team of seven students works together to come up with the most creative responses to the challenges that are presented to them. The challenges come under four topics including Science Technology, Engineering Mathematics, Social Sciences and Language Literature. 
 
Tournament of Minds comes round once a year. It involves 12 weeks of training, including 6 weeks of intensive preparation in the lead up to competition day. The team must be made up of 7 students from Years 7-10.
